Treating and preventing gingivitis

Gingivitis is an inflammation of your gums and if left untreated, it can lead to more serious gum diseases and complications. As gingivitis is an entry-level form of periodontal disease, it attacks your gum tissue and can eventually work its way to your jawbone and result in permanent damage including tooth loss. Gingivitis is caused by bacteria build-up in your mouth that goes untreated. It is relatively easy to diagnose on your own, as the warning signs are clearly visible. Some symptoms of gingivitis include:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Bright red or purple appearance to gums
  • Gums that are tender
  • Mouth sores
  • Swollen gums
  • Shiny appearance to gums

When you fail to take proper care of your teeth, an excess of bacteria gathers in your mouth, resulting in plaque build-up. Plaque is the accumulation of tiny food particles, particularly sugars and the excess of bacteria in your mouth. The particles act as food for the bacteria and this is what creates plaque: that white, sticky substance on your teeth. Plaque is the major cause of tooth decay and when left unattended, plaque eventually hardens, turning into tartar.

Both plaque and tartar are known to inflame your gums, causing gingivitis. The single best way to prevent and treat gingivitis is to exercise an effective daily oral hygiene routine, which includes brushing and flossing twice a day. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste to brush your teeth and tongue. A mouthwash can also help to reduce the bacteria in your mouth. Lastly, at a minimum, regular bi-annual checkups and teeth cleanings with your dentist can also help you win the fight against gingivitis.
